Lent 5 emphasizes hope and new life emerging from despair, as in the valley of dry bones or the raising of Lazarus. Moral struggle is often reduced to simple labels like “sin” or “wrongdoing,” as if every moral ache can be explained by personal failure. While responsibility matters, many experiences of moral pain arise from complex circumstances, systemic pressures, or the consequences of others’ actions. Oversimplified language can obscure the real depth of what we or others experience, including harm caused by choices or circumstances beyond our control. In the week ahead, notice and expand the words you use to name moral tension, creating space for insight, compassion, and renewed understanding.
