Community Corner for September 18, 2022

As we approach September 30, 2022, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, there are many resources to explore. Some people suggest that “reconciliation is dead” but see THIS ARTICLE from Indigenous Corporate Training Inc. for a different viewpoint.

Looking for something to do this week? Check out Explore Edmonton at https://exploreedmonton.com/event-calendar for great ideas around town. This week’s highlights include Alberta Culture Days, The Eagles at Rogers Place, and The Edmonton International Film Festival!

Mental Health Highlight for September 18, 2022

Sanctuary Mental Health Ministries. From the website: How can a church become a sanctuary—a place where individuals living with mental health challenges feel safe, supported, and a sense of belonging? The Sanctuary Course was created to inspire and equip communities of faith that are asking this important question. Developed in consultation with mental health professionals, theologians, and people with lived experience, this eight-session study guide explores key mental health topics and examines meaningful ways to offer companionship, support recovery, and promote wellbeing. Please visit https://sanctuarymentalhealth.org/sanctuary-course for more information. Michelle S. is planning to host the eight-part Sanctuary Course from Oct. 4 to Nov. 22 if there is enough interest. Please talk to her to express interest or for more info.

Mapping the Ground We Stand On

Friday, September 30, 2022

Mark your calendars! On September 30, 2022, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we are excited to host “Mapping the Ground We Stand On.” This is an interactive workshop created by the PWRDF. It explores Indigenous presence and Settler arrival on the map of Turtle Island/Canada at first contact. An informative video can be found HERE, and you can also visit their website for further description at https://pwrdf.org/mapping-exercise.

The event will run at St. Paul’s on Friday, Sept. 30 beginning at 1:30pm. Free of charge.
Registration opens September 15, 2022 at the link below.
This even only has a maximum number of 30 attendees. Please include all attendees on your registration.
If there is not enough space you may register for the waiting list.

Also included below is a warm-up exercise. Prior to attending the event, please complete it as much as you are able. This Warm-up will enrich your experience and help inform your participation in the event:

  1. Identify the traditional Indigenous territory you live in now. Who are the original, Indigenous inhabitants of the land where you are currently living? (Hint: Your municipality, parish, or local educational institution may have a Territorial Acknowledgement posted online to help you answer this question.)
  2. Identify any Indigenous land traeaties governing that territory, if applicable. To search communities and treateis, go to: https://www.whose.land/en/?npi
  3. Choose a side of your family as a representative of your ancestor's arrival (or your arrival if you are a first-generaltion immigrant) on northern Turtle Island (Canada) and identify the traditional territory where they first settled (if different from where you were born and/or now live).
  4. Learn which territory you were born in or have lived in, and their treaties (if different from the land where you are currently living).

  Announcing St Paul’s Kids Crew!

Announcing St Paul’s Kids Crew!

With the support of a “Say ‘YES’ to Kids’ Grant from the AFC, we’re excited to announce St Paul’s Kids Crew! This group of elementary school kids (ages 6-12, grades 1-6) will get a weekly opportunity from September 15 to December 15 for activities that enhance their emotional, social, and recreational lives. Kids Crew will meet on Thursdays from 2:30-4:00pm as this is Grovenor Elementary School’s early dismissal day. In addition to meeting weekly, participants get to bring their family members to special, once-a-month, no-cost family meals. This is a great way to get to know other kids and their families, have fun together, and enjoy a nice night out. Please pray for the families in Grovenor who would benefit from this program, and for staff and volunteers for the various aspects of this ministry.
