In this season of merriment, it is worth remembering that the Advent and Christmas seasons aren’t celebratory for everyone. Many people experience anxiety, depression and seasonal affective disorder at this time of year. The cold weather, lack of daylight, and emphasis on joy can have an adverse effect on one’s mental health, and it takes additional effort and intention to look after one’s self. Perhaps this is your first holiday season after the death of a loved one. Whether your loss happened in the last twelve months, or years ago, the absence of the loved one is emphasized in large and little ways, and grief can come up at anytime. These are normal and natural responses to the absence of your loved one, and there are many ways to find support. Talking with trusted friends and family, a trusted spiritual advisor, or seeking out group supports or individual counselling can all be helpful.
